Running tournaments
In short
- Tournaments are available from the GROWTH plan up. On Starter you can see the overview, but creating one is locked.
- You collect teams first. As soon as you publish the tournament, openmatch automatically reserves courts for the maximum possible number of entrants, before registration even closes.
- Every player pays their own entry fee by card. Winning brings the team captain a discount code towards a future booking at your venue: no money, no stored credit.
Available from the GROWTH plan
Tournaments are a feature of the GROWTH plan and above. On Starter you can see the tournaments overview in your app, but creating a new tournament is locked, and an upgrade prompt takes you straight to the right plan.

Collect teams first, courts are reserved at publication
A tournament runs in two phases. Phase A: you publish the tournament and players register with their team. At the moment you publish, openmatch already reserves the courts needed for the maximum possible number of entrants, not only once registration closes, and not your whole calendar. Slots that are already sold are left untouched. Only after registration closes (phase B) does openmatch assign the actual teams to those reserved courts and build the schedule.
You can optionally tie a tournament to a specific court type, padel doubles only for example. openmatch then derives the team size directly from the court capacity: a padel doubles court (4 players per match) gives you pairs automatically, while a football pitch with room for 10 to 22 players lets you pick 5, 6, 7, 8 or 11 a side.
Entry fee: every player pays their share
Every registered player pays their own entry fee by card, and a team is confirmed only once every member has actually paid. A team captain can optionally cover their team-mates' entry fees, but splitting per head is the normal case.

Price, prize and cancellation
When you complete the tournament, the winning team does not receive money. The team captain receives a discount code for your venue, one code per team, not per player. The code is a price reduction on a future booking at your venue: valid for 180 days by default, redeemable once, tied to the person (only the captain can redeem it), never cash and never stored credit. Important for how you talk to players about it: the discount reduces the booking price by at most 80%; a remainder of at least 20% of the booking price, and never less than €8, is always payable by the player. On cheap bookings the discount is therefore smaller than 80%, and if a booking is so cheap that this remainder would not be left, the code cannot be redeemed for that booking; any unused discount lapses and is not credited. These conditions are set out in the Terms and in the prize notification the captain receives, so always call the prize a "discount" yourself, never a "voucher" or "prize money" legal review pending.
If you have to cancel a tournament, every player who has already paid is refunded automatically and in full, to the card they paid with legal review pending. The Terms are what binds.
